Land use has little influence on the soil seed bank in a central African moist forest

چکیده
Abstract Regeneration of tropical forest occurs naturally and mainly through early secondary succession by soil seed banks. Here, we analyzed bank variation in density diversity along a degradation gradient. We also explored the relationship (similarity composition) between seedling banks overstory vegetation. The investigated forests were located at Dja Fauna Reserve its surroundings, south‐eastern Cameroon. sampled 33 one‐ha plots scattered protected area, logging concession community forests. Within each plot, inventoried litter four successive layers 5 cm depth interval, standing Seed significantly varied with sampling but not land use types. A total 181 morphospecies identified. Trees species accounted for 46% seeds pioneer dispersed animals dominating bank. Species composition strongly depth; was more similar to than bank, sapling, stands. highlighted presence dense diverse type. showed differentiation terms composition, thus revealing their complementarity dynamics natural regeneration. dominance pioneers weak are universal logically follow from after disturbance. Seed rain, soil seed bank, seed loss and regeneration of Castanopsis fargesii (Fagaceae) in a subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest
Understanding the seed rain and seed loss dynamics in the natural condition has important significance for revealing the natural regeneration mechanisms. We conducted a 3-year field observation on seed rain, seed loss and natural regeneration of Castanopsis fargesii Franch., a dominant tree species in evergreen broad-leaved forests in Dujiangyan, southwestern China. The results showed that: (1)...

متن کاملInvasion by Solidago species has limited impacts on soil seed bank communities
Increasing attention in invasion biology is being paid to measuring and understanding the impacts of invasive species. For plant invasions, however, the impact of invasion on soil seed bank communities has been under-studied. At six sites in southern Germany, we investigated whether areas invaded by Solidago gigantea and Solidago canadensis experienced a reduction in seed bank species richness,...
متن کاملThe soil seed bank during Atlantic Forest regeneration in Southeast Brazil.
A survey was conducted to determine the density and species composition of viable seeds buried in four stands of a tropical montane forest at Parque Estadual Intervales, Brazil. The objective was to understand: (1) how numbers and composition of the soil seed bank change as the forest regrows, and (2) how such changes affect the species available for regeneration if forests of different ages ar...
